How Big Will Facebook Get?

  March 9th, 2011

Looking at the meteoric growth of Facebook, one could assume that Facebook will continue to grow as the largest social network property. Consider the following stats since Facebook was first launched 7 years ago, in February 2004, from the Harvard dorm of Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin.
Growth of Facebook

  • Facebook reached 100 million users in August of 2008 and then doubled to 200 million 8 months later.
  • Facebook doubled once again to 400 million in February 2010, but this time it took 10 months to double.
  • Facebook has since taken 12 months to "only" increase 50%.
  • By this rate, by February 2012 Facebook will finally reach 800,000 million users.

While one could look at these numbers and be astounded, one could also take a more pessimistic perspective and conclude these numbers are ominous -- Facebook's growth is slowing down. And if Facebook's growth slows down, will it go the way of its predecessors -- MySpace and Friendster? Or is it "Too Big To Fail"?

A look back at the history of social networks indicates no social network is too big to fail.

What do you think -- will Facebook continue to grow towards total world domination? Or is the Facebook Empire approaching its peak?
